Fighting with Intelligence: What It Really Means
Understanding the Battle of the Mind
When you step onto the mats, or into the octagon, there's more at play than just physical strength. It is of-course important, but let's be real: raw strength can only take you so far.
The Art of Strategy
Every time I roll in jiu-jitsu, I'm reminded that intelligence is crucial. It's not just about how strong or skilled you are, but how well you can understand patterns and if/then scenarios. It requires you to adapt to the movements of your opponent. You enter a flow state, almost like a dance. Sometimes you lead, sometimes you follow. Personally, I'm most proud of winning positional, technical or submission exchanges when they were based on doing the right thing at the right time, as opposed to using full force.
Thinking Ahead
When I watch MMA fights, I often find myself scrutinizing the fighters' decisions – why did he throw that kick? Was it really a good idea to engage with a grappler? Sometimes, I wince as a fighter recklessly charges in. Is it bravery or foolishness? There's a fine line, and experience gives you the clarity to see it. I've followed the UFC for over a decade now, and the most successful fighters know when to fight smart. Jon Jones is arguably one of the best when it comes to MMA intelligence (enjoy retirement champ). Gordan Ryan undeniably the GOAT when it comes jiu-jitsu intelligence.
Emotional Nuance in Combat
Your mind is as important as your body. I've seen fighters crumble under pressure, not because they were less skilled, but because their strategy faltered. There's something raw about feeling your heart race as you're stuck in a submission hold, the world narrowing to just you and your opponent. I often find myself in those moments—who's thinking clearer? Who's analyzing movements faster? Sometimes I think that's where the fight is really won or lost.
Adaptability: The Highest Skill
In jiu-jitsu, I learned that the mat is a living entity, always changing. One moment you're in guard, the next you're defending against a leglock submission . It's chaotic, yet it requires calm and focus. Adaptability is a prized possession in any fight. Always watching, always ready to pivot. It's like a video game; you must adapt your strategy based on the opponent's moves. I apply the same mindset in my life, whether at the gym, while gaming, or even when teaching jiu-jitsu. There's always room to learn.
Incorporating Experience
From my experiences on the pitch, playing football, I realized the importance of teamwork, even in individual sports. Your teammates—and your training partners—help you explore strategies that you might have never thought of alone. Those moments of grappling, literally and metaphorically, shape how I view fighting today.
Final Thoughts
There's power in fighting intelligently. It means understanding that strength is useful, but it's your mind that can turn the tide of a match. Whether I'm on the mats or watching the latest UFC card, I keep this principle close to my heart. Fight smart, adapt, and, more importantly, enjoy the journey.
